Career Break (Teachers)

The Career Break Scheme (Circular Letter 0054/2019 Ch. 7) is only available to teachers registered with the Teaching Council (excluding Principals and Deputy Principals). 

The relevant notice and circular letter is circulated to all Principals/Head of Centres in January of each year.

The closing date for receipt of career break applications is 1st February, for the academic session commencing in September of that year (i.e. applications for career breaks for the 2021/22 academic year must be received by 1st February).

Application Form

A career break is for a period of not less than 1 school year and may be extended, subject to approval, on an annual basis provided the total period of the Career Break does not exceed 5 years at any one time, subject to an overall maximum of 10 years absence in the course of the teacher's career.
