Sick Leave

Self-certified Sick Leave

In the Vocational Sector a teacher may take 3 consecutive days and not exceeding 7 days in a 2-year period without a medical certificate.  If a teacher employed by the ETB is absent on a Friday and on the following Monday, then the absence will be recorded as 4 days' leave and a medical certificate will be required.  Where a teacher is absent on either Friday or Monday, only the day on which the teacher is absent will be reckoned as sick leave.

Certified Sick Leave

A medical certificate is required on the 4th day of absence. Please note in the Vocational Sector if a staff member is absent on a Friday and the following Monday, it is counted as a four day absence and you must submit a medical certificate.

A Permanent Wholetime Teacher (PWT) may be absent on certified sick leave for 3 months on full pay and 3 months on half-pay.

A Pro-Rata Part-Time Teacher (PRT) may be absent on certified sick leave for 3 months on full pay and 3 months on half-pay.

Staff on long-term sick leave must submit medical certificates regularly. A monthly medical certificate is the maximum that may be accepted. CDETB cannot accept open-ended medical certificates.

Staff paying a full PRSI (A stamp) must claim Disability Benefit from the Department of Family & Social Affairs and submit cheques to the CDETB Banking Section.
